Oyet Denounces SPLM-IO’s Interim Leadership Move

Current Situation in South Sudan
The political situation in South Sudan has taken a dramatic turn with the appointment of an interim leadership of the SPLM-IO party in Juba. This move has been met with condemnation from the party’s Deputy Chairman, Oyet Nathaniel, who has called on guarantors and observers of the 2018 Revitalized Peace Agreement to intervene.

The SPLM-IO group met at a Juba hotel and proclaimed Peacebuilding Minister Stephen Par Kuol as interim leader, deputized by Federal Affairs Minister Losuba Wango, with MP Agok Makur as secretary general. This move was seen as a challenge to the leadership of First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar, who is currently under house arrest. The faction claimed that the interim leadership would stay in place until Machar is freed.
Reaction from Oyet Nathaniel
Oyet Nathaniel, who is also the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, has condemned the appointment of the interim leadership, stating that it is null and void. He accused the group of plotting to replace Machar and violating the provisions of the party’s basic document. Oyet also called on the regional and international community to intervene and safeguard the 2018 peace agreement.
Suspension of Party Members
In a press statement, Oyet announced that all members of the SPLM-IO faction assuming the party’s interim leadership had been suspended on April 6 for plotting to replace Machar. This move has further deepened the crisis within the party and raised concerns about the stability of the country.
International Community’s Role
The international community, including the United Nations, has warned that South Sudan is on the brink of another civil war. Regional leaders, such as Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and Kenyan Envoy Raila Odinga, have visited Juba to engage parties on de-escalation and implementing the 2018 peace deal. The African Union Pane of the Wise has also sent a delegation to Juba to help resolve the crisis.
Humanitarian Situation
The current situation in South Sudan has had a devastating impact on the humanitarian situation. The country has experienced a deteriorating security and political situation since February 2025, with outbreaks of violence in Upper Nile, Western Equatoria, and Western Bahr el Ghazal, and cantonment sites in Central Equatoria. The United Nations has warned that the country is on the brink of another civil war, which would have catastrophic consequences for the civilian population.
Conclusion
The current situation in South Sudan is precarious, with the appointment of an interim leadership of the SPLM-IO party in Juba exacerbating the crisis. The international community must intervene to safeguard the 2018 peace agreement and prevent the country from plunging into another civil war. The humanitarian situation is dire, and urgent action is needed to protect civilians and prevent further suffering. It is essential for the parties involved to engage in direct dialogue and work towards a peaceful resolution to the crisis.

SPLM-IO leader Oyet expresses worry about reported government restructuring plan

Oyet Nathaniel Denounces Violations Threatening Peace Agreement
Introduction
The SPLM–IO led by Acting Chairman Oyet Nathaniel has written to the African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, reiterating his group’s rejection of an alleged attempt in Juba to alter the structure of the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity (R-TGoNU).
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Key Violations
- Detention of several officials from SPLM-IO
- Removal of governors and ministers without consultation
- Dismissal of commissioners without due process
In his letter to the regional peace guarantors, Mr. Oyet denounced these violations and pointed out that they are threatening to derail the implementation of the 2018 peace agreement.
Declaration of War
Oyet described the violations by the SPLM–IG and affiliated security forces as a declaration of war on their part, leading to attacks on SPLM/SPLA-IO-controlled areas, cantonments, and training centers.
He also highlighted the persecution faced by SPLM-IO members throughout the country, including threats, arrests, detention, and loss of lives and properties.
Call for Action
Oyet warned that the revitalized peace agreement is on the verge of collapse and called for the release of political detainees, including First Vice President Machar, to save the deal.
Internal Split
The SPLM-IO is currently experiencing an internal split, primarily driven by political crises sparked by renewed violence and the house arrest of its leader Dr. Riek Machar.
Hon. Oyet pre-emptively suspended several senior members in early April, accusing them of conspiring with President Salva Kiir’s government to replace Machar. The Juba faction rejected their suspension as unconstitutional and unfounded.
Government Response
Cabinet Minister Dr. Martin Elia Lomuro announced plans to speed up the peace deal and proposed the government’s recognition of a legitimate SPLM-IO faction and the restructuring of leadership positions left vacant by detained or absent members of the group.
Dr. Lomuro emphasized the government’s commitment to peace and argued that the 2018 accord’s implementation cannot be held hostage by divisions within parties or parallel armed forces. The High-Level Standing Committee (HLSC) will convene soon to recognize which SPLM IO faction to allow for continuation in the implementation of RARCSS.
Conclusion
The situation in South Sudan remains fragile as violations and political tensions threaten to undermine the peace agreement. Oyet Nathaniel’s strong stance against these violations highlights the urgent need for all parties to uphold their commitments and work towards lasting peace and stability in the country.
