South Sudan Launches Construction of First Modern Bonded Warehouse in Juba

“At last, we can address the critical needs of our customs infrastructure,” stated Simon Akuei Deng, the Commissioner General of the South Sudan Revenue Authority, at the groundbreaking ceremony of the first modern bonded warehouse in Juba. The new facility, expected to revolutionize the handling of imported goods, marks a significant stride in South Sudan’s efforts to streamline customs operations and enhance revenue collection.

The bonded warehouse will provide secure storage for imported goods under customs control, significantly easing congestion at border points and expediting the processing for both importers and exporters. This initiative is set to transform the way trade is conducted in the region, ensuring faster clearance of goods and improving overall trade facilitation.

“The project will at last help us in revenue administration and collection, and to maximize space for storage of goods that are imported into the country either through South Sudan borders or through international airports,” Simon Akuei Deng explained during the ceremony.

The introduction of this facility is anticipated not only to curb revenue leakage by providing secure storage under constant customs supervision but also to enhance the efficiency of tax and duty collections. The warehouse will be equipped with advanced inventory management systems that enable real-time tracking of goods, an essential feature for modern customs operations.

Additionally, the warehouse will incorporate robust security systems to deter smuggling and ensure compliance with international trade standards. This move is part of a broader reform by the South Sudan Revenue Authority aimed at aligning the nation’s customs framework with global practices and enhancing the domestic revenue base.

Officials have highlighted that the new facility will also bolster local businesses by offering reliable storage solutions and quicker access to markets, which is expected to stimulate job creation and promote broader economic benefits across the country.

The construction of the bonded warehouse represents a critical component of national efforts to build a resilient and transparent revenue system. While no official completion date has been provided, the anticipation around the warehouse underscores its potential impact on South Sudan’s economic landscape.
