SPLM-IO Denies Abandoning Peace Deal, Cites Fear for Lives

Current Situation in South Sudan

The SPLM-IO (Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-In Opposition) has stated that its members fled Juba due to fear of persecution and crackdown by security organs. This statement comes after the Information Minister, Hon. Michael Makuei, claimed that several senior officials of the group, including SPLM-IO deputy chairperson Oyet Nathaniel, had fled Juba to Uganda or gone into hiding within South Sudan.

Reasons for Fleeing

According to Makuei, these individuals vanished after learning of an impending arrest. Among those who disappeared were Gen. Yiey Dak, the Deputy Director General of the Internal Security Bureau of National Security Service, Gen. Wilson Walebe of the SSPDF, and Minister of Water Pal Mai Deng. However, the SPLM-IO refutes this statement, describing it as "baseless" and a propaganda from the SPLM-In Government and its allies.

Response from SPLM-IO

The Chairperson of SPLM-IO National Committee for Information and Communication, Pal Mai Deng, stated that the narrative that those who left Juba have walked out of the R-TGoNU (Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity) is baseless and cheap propaganda. He claimed that the aim of the SPLM-IG and its allies is to abrogate the R-ARCSS (Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan) through the appointment of SPLM-IG members and SPLM-IO defectors to National and State positions meant for the SPLM-IO.

Commitment to Peace

The SPLM-IO reiterated its commitment to the full implementation of the Revitalized Agreement in letter and spirit and called on other parties signatories to the peace deal to show the same commitment. The opposition said it is committed to dialogue as the only means for resolving challenges facing the implementation and violations of the peace pact.

Demands

The SPLM-IO has called for the unconditional release of First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar and other political and military detainees, and the unconditional withdrawal of all foreign troops from the territory of South Sudan. The party has also condemned the appointment of an interim leadership, which was proclaimed by a faction that met at a hotel in Juba.

Current Challenges

South Sudan has experienced a deteriorating security and political situation since February 2025, following the outbreak of violence in Upper Nile, Western Equatoria, and Western Bahr el Ghazal, and cantonment sites in Central Equatoria. This has prompted the United Nations to warn that the country is on the brink of another civil war.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the situation in South Sudan remains volatile, with the SPLM-IO and the government having different views on the reasons for the fleeing of senior officials. The SPLM-IO has reiterated its commitment to peace and has called for the release of detainees and the withdrawal of foreign troops. The international community has warned of the risk of another civil war, and it remains to be seen how the situation will unfold in the coming days.

South Sudan Army Retakes Control Of Nasir Town

Recent Developments in South Sudan

The South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) announced on Sunday evening that they have regained control of Nasir town, the capital of Upper Nile State’s Nasir County. This announcement was made by the army spokesman, Maj. Gen. Lul Ruai Koang, through a statement.

Background of the Conflict

Nasir, located 180 kilometers southeast of Malakal, was seized by Nuer ethnic armed youth, known as the White Army, in early March. This takeover occurred after an SSPDF attempt to disarm local residents. The White Army is an armed youth group that fought alongside the main armed opposition Sudan People’s Liberation Army in Opposition (SPLA-IO) during the 2013-2018 civil war.

Recapture of Nasir Town

The recapture of Nasir town by the SSPDF is a significant development in the region. According to the army spokesman, Lul Ruai Koang, the army had retaken the town, but he provided no further details on the circumstances of the recapture. Koang described the recapture of Nasir as "the greatest Easter Holidays gift for servicemen who had paid the ultimate price during its defense and recapture."

Reaction from the White Army

There was no immediate comment from the White Army regarding the recapture of Nasir town. The SSPDF spokesman stated that the military would release further information about the recapture.

Previous Developments

The announcement of the recapture of Nasir town comes days after the military reported taking control of Ulang County headquarters following a withdrawal by armed youth. This indicates that the SSPDF is making efforts to regain control of areas that were previously taken over by armed groups.

Conclusion

The recapture of Nasir town by the SSPDF is a significant development in the region, and it remains to be seen how the situation will unfold in the coming days. The lack of comment from the White Army suggests that the situation is still volatile, and further clashes may occur. The SSPDF’s efforts to regain control of areas taken over by armed groups are ongoing, and the situation in South Sudan remains complex and unpredictable.
