Meeting with President Salva Kiir

The delegation engaged in multiple discussions with senior government officials during their two-day visit to the capital. However, it is worth noting that opposition groups and key signatories to the peace agreement were excluded from these meetings.

Call for Full Implementation

In a public statement released by the president’s office, Chairperson Youssouf urged all parties to the agreement to work together towards the comprehensive implementation of the peace deal. He emphasized the importance of solidarity and unity among South Sudanese leaders in achieving lasting peace in the country.

Challenges Facing South Sudan

The delegation’s visit comes at a critical time for South Sudan, as the nation grapples with escalating political tensions, the arrest of key opposition figures, and pockets of insecurity across the country. The detention of Dr. Riek Machar, the country’s First Vice President and leader of the SPLM-IO, has further complicated the peace process.

  • Machar and several SPLM-IO officials were arrested in March following a crackdown by the Kiir administration.
  • The government accused Machar of orchestrating an attack that resulted in the death of a senior military commander and UN peacekeeper.
  • These events have led to increased mistrust and instability in the region.

Revitalised Agreement on Peace

The Revitalised Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan aims to establish a Transitional Government of National Unity, with the SPLM-IO playing a crucial role in the peace process. However, the recent developments have raised concerns about the agreement’s viability.

Conclusion

While the call for full implementation of the peace agreement by the AUC delegation is a positive step towards lasting peace in South Sudan, the exclusion of key opposition figures from the discussions raises questions about the inclusivity and effectiveness of the current peace process. It is imperative for all parties to come together, set aside their differences, and work towards a peaceful and prosperous future for the people of South Sudan.
