The University of Bahr el Ghazal has resumed supplementary exams for over 2,000 students after the university’s staff lifted its prolonged strike over unpaid salaries. The strike, which lasted for six months, was partially lifted early this month after the staff received their March 2025 salaries.

Background of the Strike

The Academic Staff Association and Workers’ Trade Union had been on strike due to non-payment of their salaries. However, after Vice President for Economic Cluster Dr. Benjamin Bol Mel promised to ensure civil servants are paid on the 24th of each month, the staff agreed to lift the strike.

Resumption of Exams and Classes

The University’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Dr. Barnado Erneo Bernardo Ochi, confirmed that the supplementary and substitute examinations were proceeding smoothly. He also announced that classes for first-year students will begin on April 25, while lectures for senior students are scheduled to start in June. Approximately 4,000 students are enrolled, and 50% of them are currently taking their exams.
